Social Justice Leaders Protection 2023

The Public Virtue’s 2022 Annual Notes found that Indonesia’s democracy regression is keep in pace through five symptomps. First, there is a shrinking of public space, both in digital space and in physical space, for civil society by narrowing the opportunity for people to make criticism. Second, there is a repression against opposition which causes the loss of the quality of political opposition. Third, there is undermining attempt on electoral process to maintain the power of the incumbent government. Fourth, environmental destruction occurs as a result of an undemocratic decision-making process. Fifth, the weakening of the application of a gender perspective in the policies and practices of democratic life. All of these challenges are the parameters used by PVRI in measuring democracy in Indonesia.

To respond to this, activists need resilience through the Social Justice Leaders Protection (SJLP) program. The aim is to increase their capacity and resilience in dealing with various vulnerable situations that threaten their work. This program is carried out in a series of: first, preparation of introductory material and case studies on the security and protection of social justice fighters based on current conditions; and second, training on the protection of social justice fighters from a theoretical and practical perspective. Introductory materials, case studies and training materials will then be compiled into a module that can be disseminated.
